Tropical Storm Cristobal

Article by Mark Boardman

It is hurricane season, and these in the path of these huge storms keep a wary eye out to the east to see what may possibly be heading their way.

Tropical cyclone Cristobal circulated with its mid point just offshore on the east coast of the US, but it has not turn out to be any greater organized since the afternoon of Saturday, in reality winds on the North Carolina and South Carolina coastline had been very light. Cristobal brushed the coast on Sunday with only minor affect on land (locally hefty showers and windy weather, but be wary of rip currents if you are out in the ocean!).

A tropical cyclone is a system characterized by a very low stress storm centre and numerous thunderstorms that make powerful winds and typically devastating, flooding rain. A tropical cyclone feeds on heat released when moist air rises, resulting in condensation of water vapour held in the damp air. These storms are fuelled by a completely various heat mechanism than other cyclonic formations such as nor’easters, European depressions, and polar lows, top to them being classed as “warm core” storm techniques.

The phrase “tropical” refers to each the geographic origin of these techniques, which form pretty a lot wholly in tropical regions of the earth, and their formation in maritime tropical air masses. The phrase “cyclone” refers to this kind of storms’ cyclonic nature, with anti-clockwise rotation in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise rotation in the Southern. Dependent upon their area and power, tropical cyclones are referred to by other names, such as hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression or just plain and just cyclone.

Cristobal, however, brought back thoughts of Alex in 2004, which was in an almost identical place, slipping parallel to the coast and delivering a significantly stronger punch than had appeared likely at first. The storm all of a sudden grew to become a Cat 2 hurricane, its storm centre adjacent to the shore, its western eye-wall clipped the Outer Banking institutions. Ocracoke Island was hit especially hard. Thankfully Cristobal promised considerably, but delivered small! And that, my friends, is a great point.

Cristobal did appear very good on radar, with a normal hook and even commencing to rotate at it really is core but as it ran out of energy the primary injury came from the line of storms causing sturdy winds along the outer edges. So the results on the North Carolina coast have been nowhere near as bad as from hurricane Alex ($ seven.five Million injury from Alex), and this is assisted by the lack of a storm surge from Cristobal to inundate the coast. So, Cristobal has behaved herself and remained the bearer of a fair bit of rain but tiny else! But we are in hurricane season and previously the up coming program is brewing off the coast of Africa. Observe this space, who knows when the following cat 5 Hurricane will sweep across the atlantic.
